When I spotted a headline on Facebook about Vogue putting an actual and factual Black woman with cornrows on the cover, I had to click the link.
Lately, there’s been a ton of love for braided styles….only not on Black women. Between video tutorials teaching tweens how to get Katy Perry’s “boxer braids,” to Kim Kardashian-West trying to rename cornrows the “KKW Signature Braid,” Black hairstyles are all the rage, as long as they’re on everybody else. That’s why I was excited to see the latest cover of Vogue.
While the cover and accompanying editorial are gorg, I have to admit I was a little bummed it was Vogue Spain instead of US Vogue. Either way, Ivorian-French model Aya Jones looks absolutely stunning.
Aptly titled “The Queen of Africa,” Jones was photographed in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, where local women worked with hairstylist Karim Belghiran to create her look.
